IIMs & ENTREPRENEURS
The final placement reports released this week from IIM-A saw 518 offers going out to 428 students, once again clocking a growth in total number of offers over the previous years. While the finer details of the audited placement report are awaited, we took a look at the Entrepreneur output from the IIMs over the last 5 years. While many IIMs do not publish the number of candidates opting out of the placement process on grounds of Entrepreneurial pursuits or managing family-owned businesses, the data from the top institutes shows a downward trend in the number of students opting out of the placement process on these grounds.

Contrary to popular belief, the absolute number of students opting for entrepreneurship is interestingly low. For example the placement stats from IIM-A say that out of 398 eligible candidates in placement year 2019, only 2 chose to take up the entrepreneur journey, while the number stood at 13 out of 381 in placement year 2014.
In our study of 330 C-Suite & Top Brass executives from over 30 Indian Unicorns, only 8 Founders were from the IIMs. However the total count of IIM Alumni in the C-Suite, excluding the Founders, stands at 42. These 42 are top brass executives holding key positions like CIO, CFO, CBO, CMOs, Directors & VPs in the Unicorns.

The 50 Top-Brass (including the 8 founders) are Alumni of IIM-A, B, C, K and L, with A,B & C contributing the lion’s share at 41 with IIM-B leading the pack. 4 out of the 8 founders as seen above are alumni of IIM-C.
